Organic Elderflower & Elderberry

“Let food be your medicine.” Hippocrates

In our recent trip to England I enjoyed elderflower cordial more than any other drink, which inspired me to do some research about this delicious flower and its health benefits. I liked the taste of this flower so much that I bought some dried elderflowers for tea and a bottle of its extract for my culinary experiments. In early summer elderflowers bloom and in late summer they become delicious clusters of dark purple berries. Elderberries can be used in Jam and different kind of baking goods and desserts. It is recomended to eat both elderflower and elderberries cooked, because eating them raw can cause nausea, diarrhea and some other digestive problems.

Elderflower has anti-inflamatory effect that helps upper respiratory infections such as colds, flu, sinusitis and bronchitis. It is diuretic and can relief constipation. It is also used to helps joint pain. Elderflower can lower blood sugar, so there is cautious for diabetic patients, those who are scheduled for surgery, and women who are pregnant or breast feed.

In general elderberries have the same health benefits as elderflowers plus improving immune system and allergies and help urinary tract infection by reducing the infection and inflammation in bladder (cystitis). Plant this beautiful tree in your backyard if you can and enjoy its delicious flower and berries tremendously. 🙂
